It’s Elementary my dear Watson – This is another risk for Ten.
Elementary is the latest incarnation of the story of a name synonymous with being the most prolific fictional detective in history – Sherlock Holmes!
In Elementary, Holmes (played by Johnny Lee Miller) is a recovering drug addict living in New York and Watson (Lucy Liu) is his assigned companion. He has decided to return to what he know best as a consultant for the NYPD helping solve crimes.
From the outset, Sherlock’s powers of observation that make him such a great detective are displayed in how he can determine so much about Watson simply by noticing the contents of her handbag when she accidentally drops the bag spilling some of what is inside.
The first episode shows how Holmes picks up what other detectives miss at a crime scene. Unlike shows like CSI, there is no technology in solving crimes, simply Sherlock’s ability to observe – almost to the point of being obsessive compulsive – oh and Google!
Elementary is essentially a crime procedural that focuses character building exploring the personalities of Sherlock Holmes and Watson, but it has all been down before and done better.
Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock Holmes, all tatted up and disheveled, is enjoyable to watch. His mannerisms are quirky and endearing, his ramblings are entertaining, and his monologues command attention. Liu’s role as Watson is subtle and nuanced, often helping to open up Miller’s performances and intrigue the audience.
Elementary will air on Ten in February.
